What is IP protection and why is it important?
IP protection (“Ingress Protection”) is one of the most important factors when designing outdoor or industrial lighting. This standard (IEC 60529) describes how well a luminaire is protected against dust, dirt, and water. The IP code consists of two digits: the first (0–6) indicates the level of protection against solid particles (such as dust), while the second (0–8) shows the resistance to the ingress of liquids (e.g., water).
The higher these numbers are, the stronger the protection. For example, an IP65 rating means that the fixture is completely dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets. Where should you use lighting with a high IP rating?
